  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle CustomerTop Contributor: Baseball -- A Delightful Tale : This a delightful tale of Washington Irving going back to an old country estate in England to celebrate a Christmas of Olde England. Irving. takes us from the travel to the estate,Christmas Eve and all the festivities of Christmas Day. The squire and his household still celebrate Christmas as they did 100 or more years before this time. Irving laments the passing of these traditions and hopes they would last forever. It's interesting that even in Irving's time that someone, like today, laments passing traditions for the more modern ones. This is a very short book and is wonderful to read. This is easily a book that could be read every Christmas season much like Dickens, A Christmas Carol. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2015 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from david holowchak -- What would he think today? : Irving laments that "modern" Christmas doesn't have the same feeling as it once did. In his travels to England he is delighted to once again experience Christmas as it should be observed. With Christmas as it is today (on life support) it makes you wonder how much he would really hate how its observed today. Will it be observed at all in the near future? • 5.0 out of 5 stars from AB -- For everyone who loves an old English Christmas : I loved this book. I've been a student of holiday history for more than 30 years. I can't believe I never came across this book until now. Anyone who enjoys Washington Irving (Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Rip Van Winkle) or Charles Dickens (A Christmas Carol) will enjoy this book. It's a proper old English Christmas, the type undoubtedly celebrated by Mr. Darcy at his manor in Pride & Prejudice or by the family in The Wolves of Willoughby Chase. For those who have read extensively on pagan origins of modern holiday celebrations or have read about medieval customs (lord of misrule, etc.), much will be familiar. It is all here - the ancient manor house in the country, the huge yule log burning on the hearth, the old harper in the corner, the boar's head, the peacock pie, the wassail bowl, all the games - snapdragon, blind man's bluff, etc. There are visits from Morris dancers and singing by village waites under the window. The journey by coach through the countryside, the shadowy darkness, the warmth and welcome of Christmas Eve, the church service and light of Christmas Day, the merrymaking by young and old alike, the generosity of the Christmas Day Dinner - all described in lavish and loving detail. The detailed and charming illustrations by Randolph Caldecott (for whom the Caldecott award was named) add a great deal to the text. You could not have one without the other. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Stan Sienkiewicz -- A Pleasant Reading : This is a nice short work that is about the Christmas spirit or what should be the spirit of Christmas. You can see where Dickens used parts to develop his idea of the proper spirit of Christmas. I would say the difference is that Washington focuses on the spirit of happiness and community as an end whereas Dickens brings into the story redemption. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from J. Ford -- Famous American author : It was kind of interesting to read how Christmas was celebrated in Britain as observed by Washington Irving, but it was also pretty darned dull.... ( Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2019 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Pamela J Lucarelli -- Interesting history of Christmas in victorian days : Loves the details of old traditions and how the older folks tried to keep them up. Just like today so many traditions die out with each generation!! ( Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2020 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Davy The Wrestler -- Old Christmas Paperback : Old Christmas by Washington Irving, and his style of writing allegedly inspired Charles Dickens to write A Christmas Carol. And if you love Dickens' Yuletide descriptions in his book, then you'll certainly enjoy this little collection. Irving's American views of a traditional olde English Christmas of the mid 1800's are a delight to read. He went under the pseudonym of Geoffrey Crayon Gent. writing a sketch book of multiple stories - of which this festive effort is only a tiny part - this book being as thin as a pamphlet. My only gripe is the many illustrations that accompany these charming tales are missing; which discounts it's magic somewhat - hence the three stars out of five. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Mole -- Descriptions of the way that Christmas used to be : This is a short book from the mid 19th century, divided into a series of chapters that deal with the various stages leading up to Christmas; people travelling to be with family or friends, the preparations for decorating houses and choosing presents, putting together the ingredients for the big feast, all leading to the big day itself. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Lucan Blue Nose -- An old fashioned English Christmas : An enjoyable read but hardly a riveting read. An interesting insight into how Christmas was celebrated in the early 19th century. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 13, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from nancysykes -- An olde fashioned Christmasse : This book recalls to mind the customs of old England. Irving's writing is rich in detail and description which enables the reader to imagine himself there and joining in with the celebrations. I would recommend it to anyone who has a love of Christmas in the old days. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 8, 2016 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Old Ben -- Very encouraging to read an American's effusive appreciation of things ... : Very encouraging to read an American's effusive appreciation of things English, even though I suspect slightly rose-tinted spectacles. Interesting, incidentally, to see the word 'bigot' used in its old sense of someone who sticks to his old-fashioned habits and convictions, in this case the custom of giving hospitality to travelling strangers.
