Legacy of War Customer Reviews
:- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Mark W. -- Insult to Wilbur Smith to put his name on this trash : I understand Wilbur Smith is old and uses other writers to finish out his stories but this is absolutely pathetic. I just read one of his recent books, Call of the Raven and that was clearly a Wilbur Smith book, from the highs to the lows to more lows and then highest highs it was a well written thrill ride. This model can work very well. Legacy of War had none of what makes his books so wonderful. The story was so boring, unsuspenseful and so poorly written it took me weeks to plow through. It's difficult to read more than a few pages at a time without feeling ripped off. I can't understand how this book has over a thousand 5 star reviews. No fan of Smith's books could possibly have paid $12.99 to read this and like it. No way. Wilbur had a talent for saying a lot with few words. This writer cranks out page after page without saying anything. Most characters from the past books make an appearance but other than name, they are nothing like themselves. One particularly painful scene, the governor's garden party had some of the most cringe dialog ever. Here's when Saffron meets a good looking man: ( Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Al in FL -- Good but "woke" : I'll begin by saying that I am a huge Wilbur Smith fan and have gobbled-up every book in the Courtney series at least once. I enjoyed Legacy of War but I could not help but notice a shift in the political tone of the book. I don't have a problem with it, per se, but applying 21st century morals to a story set in 1950s Kenya may be stretching things a bit far. Smith has always threaded this needle well in the past but I recognize that times are changing fast. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2021 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Gary Brown -- Legacy of War is not Wilbur Smith at His Best : Like so many prolific authors such as Wilbur Smith, the need to take on a co-author for whatever reason, produces rather marginal results. Such is the case of his latest novel, Legacy of War. Crafting a novel is no doubt a tedious undertaking especially for an author of Wilbur Smith's proclivity. Simply put, this novel was not a Wilbur Smith endeavor until the very end and only then did he put his signature efforts into the story line and the writing. Apologies to David Churchill, but you're far from sharing credits with one of my favorite authors. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2021 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from ga -- Not written by Wilbur : Don't be in a rush to buy its not a Wilbur Smith book and who ever the editor is needs to look for another job. Lots spelling mistakes in his books over the years but this one trouble reading the first few pages.. He needs to get another co writer the book co written by a woman much better than this one seemed like one of his old books an adventure from the start. I thought I should send this latest book back. - 1.0 out of 5 stars from John -- Not a Wilbur Smith novel : Terrible. Just terrible. I enjoyed Call of the Raven. I thought it was the most Wilbur Smith book in years. This is the opposite. I doubt Wilbur Smith had any involvement in this book at all. If you like 200 pages of backstory from books you have already read, page long descriptions of places and scenes with no relevance to the plot, inane and juvenile dialogue best suited to a pre-teen romance novel, no action whatsoever, and a boring and predictable plot, this is the book for you. If you like Wilbur Smith, you will be disappointed. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Martin S Lesher -- A real Legacy : If you like to read books, as I do, this is the one to read- ( Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from GR -- Keeping with the tradition : In the good old tradition of Wilbur Smith this book takes us to the beginning of Kenya's struggle for independence. Unfortunately it just touches it and only shows Jomo Kenyatta's good side. It ends too early to go into more detail of the large corruption and personal enrichment of Kenya' s 1st president. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Anna -- Like all the author’s books, full of adventure and history! : As usual, I enjoyed the amazing descriptions of the landscape, the complex character relationships, and the actual historical setting in time and place. The violence was a bit hard in this one, but it worked in sync with the broader story and history. The Courtney’s are a family set in real context, as are the various tribal characters. My assumption is that this is the very last in the Courtney series?? Maybe not?? ( Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2021 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Mr. Oldroyd -- Good but not Wilbur : It's ok but again it isn't Wilbur Smith. Wilburs characters but he did not write this yet again as with all of the last books. Good but certainly not the ' Number 1 best selling international author', but the publishers cashing in on his name ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 28, 2021 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Martin M. -- Absolute Crap! : The worst Wilbur Smith book ever! Almost gave up numerous times. Boring beyond compare. A lot of page skipping because you miss nothing. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 11, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mark I. Grant -- The Mau Mau threat, the hangover of war . African adventure : I have grown up enjoying these novels which are evocative of the African continent and its ( Perhaps European) history. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 20, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Elizabeth F. -- A great book written by a masterful story-teller! : I've read all Wilbur Smith books, either written by himself or in collaboration with h another writer, and this one has all the ingredients of his previous masterpieces! The only things that are somehow under-represented are the fabulous African flora and fauna, which were described so vividly in previous works. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 18, 2021 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from P. Carr -- Didnt enjoy as much as Wilbur Smiths previous books : I have been an avid reader of Wilbur Smith for decades. He has always been one of my fave authors. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 12, 2021 )
